New Inn / Travellers Rest

The "New Inn" was owned and run by T.C. Robinson until 1903 when it was purchased by John Swale. He did not approve of alcoholic drink; terminated the liquor licence, and ran the premises as a Temperance Hotel called the "Traveller's Rest". He also moved the Post Office to the  hotel building.

"T.C. Robinson’s "New Inn"  - That was before my grandfather went there. My grandfather (John Swale who was born at Starbottom) bought “the whole lot” - the farm, the "New Inn" and the general store. The premises had been a pub but my grandfather “cancelled that out” and turned it into a "Travellers Rest". There was a stable at one end, which he turned into more accommodation. Round the back he had the joiners shop and wheelwright's." (A. Walmsley)

The "Travellers Rest" was purchased by the Fylde Water Board around 1916 and was used as accommodation for surveyors, engineers and other officals visiting the Stocks Reservoir works until the permanent Reservoir Keepers House and Board Room was built at the dam site.
